The reason for installing cable gateway is to control traffic on a network. Previously, there used to be data networks that simply carried data traffic on a network. So nowadays, the networks are carrying a mix of traffic on the network, especially the internet. There are different standards of modulation that are used to carry traffic on a network. There are two types of cable gateway the V.8 gateway and the universal gateway.

The advantage of a universal cable gateway is that it can accept packets of different modulations and return answers in the same modulation. Either gateway can request a change to modem relay or the packet exchange continues. This in essence means that a universal cable gateway can communicate with cable gateway using different modulations. The universal cable gateway will detect the modulation automatically, and adjust its communication on that modulation.

Universal cable gateway have solved the problem of using dedicated cable gateway for different networks. Universal cable gateway have made a big impact on voice cable gateway as voice networks have changed. Previously only analog was carried on telephone networks, then digital packets were introduced. The modulations and packet sizes changed.
